Research

  • Want to participate in Long Covid research anonymously from home? Visible, the free app that helps measure and manage pacing, has collaborated with David Putrino, Director of Rehabilitation Innovation for Mount Sinai Health System in New York. Their study, “Characterizing the physiology and symptoms of people with Long Covid and ME,” will focus on the relationship between biometrics and symptoms. If you want to participate, download the app and opt to enroll your data in the study. Note that, if you’re already using the app, you must opt in to participate.
  • A new longitudinal cohort study in The Lancet: Respiratory Medicine found that 54% of hospitalized people with Covid-19 in Wuhan, China still had symptoms at two and three-year follow-ups. The findings also showed that, during the first Omicron wave, people with Long Covid at two years had a significantly higher rate of re-infection. “Those with severe Long Covid symptoms, abnormal organ function, or limited mobility require urgent attention in future clinical practice and research,” the study’s authors wrote. These results echo a study we shared last week that showed nearly 50% of veterans had Long Covid symptoms at 6 months following Covid-19 infection.
  • The global understanding of Covid’s severe impact on the brain continues to develop. A new MRI technique called diffusion microstructure imaging (DMI) was used in a recent study in Freiburg, Germany, finding microstructural changes in different brain regions in people with Long Covid compared to those without symptoms. The researchers compared brain imagery across people with Long Covid, people who reported no symptoms after Covid, and people with no history of Covid. “We not only noted widespread microstructural alterations in patients with long COVID,” the study’s lead author wrote, “but also in those unimpaired after having contracted COVID-19.”
