- A new pre-print has found that oxidative stress — or an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body that leads to cell damage — is a shared characteristic of Long Covid and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).“We report that both ME/CFS and LC are mechanistically related and could be diagnosed with quantitative blood cell measurements,” the study’s authors wrote, noting that they also found sex-specific differences in the biochemical changes that may offer clues for potential treatments for the diseases, including metformin. - A new clinical trial from the University of California, San Francisco’s LIINC study is investigating the drug Ensitrelvir for Long Covid. An antiviral, the oral drug is sold under the brand name Xocova in Japan and is used to treat Covid-19. The study will enroll around 40 participants and will administer the drug or a placebo for 5 days in a quadruple blind study. Results are expected in late 2025.
- Last week saw two major symposiums on Long Covid, Unite to Fight and the Polybio Research Symposium. The events drew some of the top researchers on Long Covid, ME, and related infection-associated diseases with presentations on the many theories of Long Covid including autoimmunity, viral persistence, reactivated viruses, and microbiome dysfunction. “If we don’t act now, Long Covid sufferers will have no hope on the horizon for the next 20 years. As a civilized society, as medics, we can’t let that happen,” researcher Danny Altmann said at Unite to Fight.
