  • Two new studies add further evidence to show Metformin, a drug commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, may help reduce the risk of Long COVID. An electronic health records study published in Diabetes Care of  75,000 people showed a lower rate of Long COVID of those taking Metformin for type 2 diabetes. A recent preprint also showed that Metformin and probiotics may help reduce the risk of Long COVID.
     
  • People with Long COVID are more likely to have food insecurity, according to a new study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The study assessed over 7,000 adults and found a “significantly higher risk of marginal and low/very low- food security among low-income adults who had Long COVID, especially those who were nonparticipants in public food assistance programs.” The authors proposed robust food assistance programs for low-income people with Long COVID.
     
  • A new antiviral trial was recently announced for Long COVID. The drug, Xafty, has antiviral capabilities against more than 30 viruses. “The goal of this study is to confirm that niclosamide can solve the complex symptoms of Long COVID through multiple mechanisms such as virus suppression, inflammation suppression, and neuroprotection,” one of the study’s leads stated in a press release
