  • Children and adolescents face a significantly increased risk of Long COVID following reinfections with SARS-CoV-2, according to a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) RECOVER preprint shared on MedRxiv. The study assessed 465,000 children and adolescents under 21 years old using electronic healthcare records from the NIH RECOVER study, focusing on those infected in 2022 and 2023. A Long COVID diagnosis was twice as likely following a reinfection compared to a first infection. The authors also found increased risk of other diagnoses including heart disease and myocarditis. “These findings… suggest that the risk of [Long COVID] may be cumulative with each successive infection,” the authors wrote.
     
  • Another study in Behavioral Sciences showed Long COVID also affects language proficiency in children. Researchers in Hong Kong assessed 1,244 children across different school levels; they compared children who had Long COVID symptoms with those who had recovered from COVID-19 and those who had not had COVID-19. The authors wrote, that the findings suggest that the disease “may have disrupted the acquisition and refinement of crucial language skills during a critical period of cognitive and academic growth.”
     
  • A small observational NIH study is recruiting to study if people with Long COVID have persistent SARS-C0V-2 remnants in their bodies. The study requires two to four inpatient visits, each four to five days in Bethesda, Maryland. There, participants will undergo numerous tissue sample procedures, including the lungs, lymph nodes, muscles, and colon. One of the researchers is Avindra Nath, who helped lead the myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) intramural study that was published last year. Contact: angelique.gavin@nih.gov or avindra.nath@nih.gov.
